We're saving the world. Or at least, we're trying to help. More precisely, we're saving a land-fill from 7,936 diapers over the next several years with Julia. Or such is the plan.
You see, Kate and I hate waste. We hate wasting money (which is why I so enjoy coupon shopping). We hate wasting materials (which is why we love Craigslist). And diapers, though obviously necessary, are basically a waste (though a very important form of waste, as the idea of a world without diapers is rather unthinkable). So, our eco-friendly frugal-bones have long been intrigued by the notion of cloth diapers. We are blessed to have a number of local friends who are a few steps ahead on the parenting path than we are, so when we have decisions like this to make, we've got experts to whom we can turn. After interviewing a few of those experienced moms who share some of our commitments in this area, we decided to jump into the cloth diaper thing.
To be sure, this isn't the sort of cloth diaper that nestled my tuckus 32 years ago. Like telephones and video-game systems (does anybody else remember playing Pitfall on ColecoVision?), diapers have made exponential improvements over the years. No more expensive diaper service. No more puncture-wound inducing diaper pins. And no more scrubbing or soaking in a basin of poo-water. It surely is a brave new world. And I'll now turn it over to the CEO and Chairwoman of the Board of the Diaper and Diaper-Related-Products Division of the Oberholtzer Babycare Corporation, since she knows infinitely more about all of this than I do.
Thanks, Chad. :) We've gone with the FuzziBunz brand and are just loving them! Below are a few pictures of the very exciting Arrival Day (they're not all ours, though! I was organizing an order for several friends). The FedEx man had to carry the boxes into our house, they were so big!
They're super-cute and super-soft and already fit on Julia, so we've made the switchover. So far, so good! I ordered one orange diaper in honor of Chad's favorite color...
Julia seems to love them! And I have a lot of fun trying to match the colors to her outfits each day... :)

OK, fill us in. If you don't use a diaper service and don't soak in a "basin of poo water" then how do you clean them? (Garden hose?)
It's quite amazing, actually...
You put the diapers into a special fabric bag, knocking any solids into the toilet beforehand. The fleece fabric inside allows that to happen really easily, or you can get thin biodegradable liner squares to make the disposal even more simple...
Then everything goes into your laundry machine, and in a few cycles - voila! Clean!
